Insight 120: How EU’s new greenwashing legislation affects B2B

September 27, 2026, the ”Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition” (ECGT) Directive takes full effect. Non-compliance is highly risky, as regulators can levy maximum penalties reaching up to 4% of a company’s annual turnover.

Many think the new EU’s anti-greenwashing rules only apply to B2C brands, but the reality is that the B2B landscape is facing a massive shakeup. While the headline rules focus on protecting everyday consumers, the commercial reality cascades directly down the supply chain.

Here is why B2B companiesgreen must act immediately:

  • The spillover effect: If your B2B marketing materials, LinkedIn posts or public websites use generic terms like “eco-friendly”, “sustainable” or “green” you are exposed. Under national marketing laws in countries like Sweden, misleading B2B claims face the same strict scrutiny as B2C ads.
  • The death of carbon offsets: You can no longer pitch your services or products as “carbon neutral” or “climate positive” if that claim relies on buying carbon credits. Only actual, proven reductions in your operational footprint count.
  • Downstream pressure: Your customers are facing the risk of massive penalties for non-compliance. To protect themselves, they will demand third-party verified Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) from their vendors. If you cannot provide the data, you risk losing the contract.
  • Verified labels only: Self-invented “eco-brands” are out. Only sustainability logos based on independent, publicly accessible certification schemes are legal.

The bottom line: Sustainability is no longer a corporate buzzword – it is a legally binding specification. To be on the safe side, audit your communication and verify your environmental claims before the September deadline hits.

As always, threats also open possibilities. So why not see this as an opportunity to refresh your argumentation and find new angles to win customers.
